VMU Series 2 Options:

  • Slave Box to power an additional cell. Adds the cables and the power box that is needed to run another HHO cell. Rated at 30 A DC. If ordering in quantity, buy it on the Slave Box page for better quantity discounts.
  • External Temperature Sensor. $29.95. You will likely want to get one temperature sensor to connect to your main hydroxy cell. This is normally connected on the outside of a cell, and is not suitable for immersion.
  • Solid-State Current Sampling. Only with the Power Box Version 3 (black). This option allows the user to:
    • Monitor the current draw in amps
    • Limit current to the cells, offering protection against drawing too much current which could overheat the cells or power box
    • Allow the AutoAmp feature to control the maximum current draw of each cell. (*6) See the Press Release for a more detailed description of AutoAmp.

(*1) OBD-II Interface Option required
(*2) Can be enabled/disabled
(*3) To read RPM, you must use passive RPM sampling (with Black Power Box) or the VMU with the OBD-II option

(*9) Solid-State Current sampling option required (included with the Power Box Version 3)

VMU Principle of Operation:

The main components of the VMU are (1) the Pulse Width Modulator or PWM, (2) the EFIE modules, (3) the MAP/MAF module, and of course (4) the user interface.

1. HTC designs th PWM to limit the current consumed by a hydroxy cell. It does this by sending to the cells a controlled amount of electrical current. The best analogy for a PWM is the dimmer switch that you might use for the lights in your home. Just as a dimmer switch can be adjusted to a desired level of illumination, the PWM adjusts the amount of current sent to your HHO cells. However, most of the time the PWM is not for lowering the amount of HHO gas produced, but rather it is set to the optimum level of current that the hydrogen cell needs. Any extra current will be wasted, so we normally set the PWM for optimum cell output. Many people do not realize that turning up the voltage on a HHO generator has no effect on the amount of HHO generated once it has reached its maximum output, and the additional current consumed by the cell merely heats up the cell. The main reasons to limit the current level have to do with cell temperature, cell electrolyte concentration, and the amount of electricity produced by the vehicle's alternator.

2. The EFIE of all EFIE's! Quad-sensor support! Now that we have optimized the HHO generator using the PWM, we can concentrate on the engine. First, we need to adjust the oxygen sensors, especially for vehicles that are model year 1996 or later. If you are installing the VMU on a diesel vehicle, you do not need to adjust the oxygen sensors even if you have them. The whole reason we adjust the output of the oxygen sensors is to trick the car's ECM/ECU (the engine control module or unit) to feed our engine with less gas. This can be achieved on a modern electronic fuel-injected gas engine by selectively altering the O2 sensor output. This VMU can adjust up to 4 different O2 sensors, which is enough for over 99% of all cars. What we do is to send the car's ECM a slightly modified signal with a small voltage offset. This offset is designed to make the car's ECU think that the exhaust gases are devoid of oxygen, even when there is a lot present. The oxygen sensor is supposed to be feedback to the ECU so that it can adjust the engine to run neither lean nor rich... The ECU tries to maintain a balanced air to fuel ratio, called stoichiometric. By tricking the ECM to thinking that the engine is running rich in fuel, the ECM will adjust the gas engine to run lean instead. Your car's engine will run lean when the ECM thinks it is running a stoichiometric ratio. Lean fuel means less fuel. Lean fuel means better gas mileage if your car is tuned properly*. Leaning the fuel makes sense when we are injecting HHO gas because we are adding both hydrogen (which allows leaner operation) and oxygen (which permits leaner operation). And we want to save money on gas, so this is a pretty important part of the VMU.

3. The other gas-saving device on the VMU is the adjustment for your MAP or MAF sensor. Depending on the year, make, and model of your car or truck, you could have either one. Essentially, the VMU is designed to trick the ECM whenever it is relying on the MAP/MAF sensor to determine the amount of fuel to inject. Whenever some engines are accelerating or revving high rpm's, there is a tendency for the oxygen sensor inputs to become effectively worthless to the ECM. So in these cases, the ECM relies on the MAP or MAF sensor to determine how much fuel to add to the engine. The VMU can trick the ECM into adding less fuel again, just as it did for the times in which it relies on the O2 sensor. Your engine will again run slightly leaner than normal (and cooler I might add) during acceleration and high rpm. The VMU will save you fuel during these excursions, whereas an EFIE would not.

4. And finally, this VMU has the beautiful and industry-leading LCD display and control panel from which the driver can adjust all of these parameters. No other company combines all of these circuits into the same package and provides such a great user interface. This is all about being able to control your entire HHO Kit from the comfort of your driver's seat, even while you drive. Monitor temperatures of the hydroxy cell in your vehicle. Using optional modules, you could even use it to monitor your speed or rpm. Use the Vehicle Management Unit menus to select your favorite display mode. Turn off the Hydroxy cells and hear how your engine starts to sound like its old self again!

*Lean air-to-fuel ratio is effective at increasing fuel economy only if the engine's timing is adjusted for lean operation. Most modern engines will make this adjustment on their own using knock sensors. Older gas cars, such as carbureted vehicles made in the 1980s and earlier, will operate best if both their timing and their air-to-fuel ratio are adjusted to save gas.

The VMU2 is is by far the best combination of electronics found in one package. You will not find anything else this good, this complete, and this versatile. The VMU Rev. 2 from Hydroxy Technologies (HTC) is years ahead of anything else. Order one today for your HHO Kit.
